New JMS Projects

At WonderCon last month, JMS had a speaking appearance, and he announced his new projects. They are:

Changeling, a new Clint Eastwood - directed movie due out this fall, about a mother whose kidnapped child is returned to her, but she begins to suspect that the returned child is not in fact hers! JMS reports that this is an "atmosphere" film, with elements of film noir in it (it takes place in the 1930's).

Ninja Assassin, an action film not scheduled for release until next year.

They Marched into Sunlight, a film that is very much a "day in the life of..." style, chronicling events taking place on a single day in the 1960's. He sounded pretty enthusiastic about this, but didn't reveal much about it.

World War Z, a "report of an epic", done in cinematic style dealing with the aftermath of a worlwide zombie epidemic. JMS pointed out that zombie films usually degenerate into a gore-fest, but very few people have ever considered the long-term effects on people or a civilization. The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder alone would have far-reaching effects, and few survivors would ever really feel safe again. From these insights, I think we can expect a very unusual film, to say the least!

New movie with Bruce Boxleitner on tonight

It's called Aces N' Eights:

New, Bruce Boxleitner, Casper Van, (2008). A band of determined frontiersmen guard their land from a sinister railroad mogul in this western starring Casper Van Dien, Bruce Boxleitner and Ernest Borgnine. (Wester, 120 Mins.)

It's on the ION channel (channel 5 on Portland's Comcast digital cable). I think *maybe* that used to be the PAX channel, but I am in no way certain of this. Mostly they have crappy stuff, but occasionally they'll show something *really* cool, like Terry Pratchett's Hogfather ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765458/ ).

Early Reivew of "The Lost Tales"

Excerpt from http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33386 (very mild spoilers)

"if you’re not a B5 fan, I would not recommend this little slice of interstitial continuity, because you don’t have a hope of figuring out what’s going on here. But for fans of the series, I think you’ll like it a lot."

and

"So what’s the final verdict on Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, volume one? As a first effort in a new format, there are certainly a few minor flaws, but I imagine most of them will be ironed out in future volumes, and let’s hope this one sells well enough to justify them."

Just fueling the addiction....

My wife and I caught a lucky break. Our local Fry's electronics had all five seasons on sale for $18 each and were sold out. So, I got rainchecks for them and have been redeeming them, one each week. So far, we've gotten through seasons 1-3 and she's TOTALLY hooked, now. We'll be getting season 4 on Friday and, we hope, season 5 next week. It's been wonderful sharing this with her (I was enthralled with the show when it was on the air) and she gets that it's really a space opera, with all of the epic details and loose ends that that genre seems to have. It's sparked many a discussion about how the story lines cross over into other tales and where many of the inspirations may have come from. She has an English degree, so she sees the ties to classic literature, like Homer and Shakespeare, that I knew about but couldn't quite grasp. What a wonderful journey it's been, together.

Anyway, I have been searching for more information to fuel our discussions, online, and have stumbled across some images/websites that I thought I should share, here. Enjoy, one and all.

Some great wallpapers: http://www.thescifiworld.net/wallpapers_babylon5.htm

More wallpapers: http://www.new-dream.de/wallpaper-film-babylon-5.php

A map of the Babylon 5 galaxy: http://sillysoft.net/lux/maps/Babylon%205%20Galactical%20Map

Promotional images: http://www.robokopp.de/SF/babylon_5.htm

The official Babylon 5 website (includes wallpapers, buddy icons and a B5 MySpace skin): http://babylon5.warnerbros.com/

The "lurker's" guide to Babylon 5: http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/lurker.html

The Babylon 5 scripts, available online: http://www.babylon5scripts.com/

Okay, so that's all I've got, for now. I've gained a new appreciation for Joe Straczynski and his vision. I've also learned that I've got more to learn about the B5 universe than I originally anticipated. So, it's an addiction with more to keep it alive than I'd imagined. How wonderful...

Love and light, dear ones.

I think this is a very well done and well-written sci-fi show, esp. in the way the episodes featuring time displacement all fit together so seamlessly. I'm looking forward to continuing my enjoyment of this show.

I've been watching the whole series on DVD and finally reached the final episode last night. I understand that it was filmed at the end of the 4th season, before they knew there would be a 5th. However, so many loose ends were not tied up--the keeper in the vase Lando gave Sheridan and Delenn, Bester and Lita, G'kar & Lando, the Dracs on Centauri Prime. From what I understand of JMS, he's a bit of a control freak so I'm surprised all this stuff was left in the air. Or is it? Are there movies that answer these questions? (I saw the one with Lando narrarating the story, and he had Delenn in a cell, then G'kar kills him in the end.)

So just wondering...

I just got season one for a good price.

Wow! Not only had I missed a couple episodes, but I didn't realize it was as decent as it is. I mean it has a few cheesey moments, but I'm really enjoying watching it again. Especially knowing how things turn out, I'm catching all kinds of details I missed. Morden went first to G'kar and asked what he wanted, and he said he wanted the Centauri Homeworld in ruins....which they later accomplish, while still giving the Centauri what Londo asked for. Neat stuff....

I don't know if anyone else has seen them, but if you look around, there are video clips out of the blooper reels made during each season of production of B5.

And they're simply hilarious. Some of the funniest moments are JMS in full Minbari regalia, and Londo saying "I tawt I taw a puddy tat."

I was introducing a friend to B5, and we were watching a
season 1 episode in which Lennier states that there are
2 Minbari castes (religious and warrior). But as we know,
there are really 3 castes.

I'm sure this was discussed before in UseNet, but I must
have missed it.

How was this explained in terms of the "B5 universe",
and what was the real world explanation?
What's the story with Sinclair and Sheridan?

I may be wrong, but I always got the impression that Sinclair was originally meant to be the Commander through all five seasons, but something happened and they had to replace him. Does anyone know why Bruce Boxleiter (I spelled that wrong)/Sheridan was brought in? Or am I completely wrong and Sinclair was only meant for a single season?

This just in, JMS is starting production on a series of straight to DVD anthologies based in the Babylon 5 universe. They will be short to medium lengh stories centered around individual characters introduced in the verse, exploring some plotlines that he wasn't able to get to in the main storyline.

Okay, so I was rewatching the Gathering and there is the part where it is revealed that the disguised Minbari has poisoned Kosh. Now my problem is that Kosh is, for all intents and purposes, energy, how can you physically poison energy?

Who Do You Serve?

I didn't have change so I squated in front of the new paper box to read what I could of the front page story.
Geroge W. Bush had finaly commented on the Swift Boat Veterns For Truth" attack adds on John Kerry.

The presedent was critisized for not saying anything about them. In the article he was quoted as saying "...they were bad for the system."

A short laugh burst out of me. I then thought to myself, "Pedro! He's doing the best that he can. Six Billion people on the planet and every one is doing the best that they can with what they know and what they have available."

On the walk to the train I though about his statement and I remembered what Republican Senator John McCain had said about the same adds: "There dishonerable."

So here were two men; one being of service to a "system" and another of service to something called "honor."

I doubt I'd never have thought of that if it weren't for some science fiction show.

Vorlons always ask, "Who are you?"

Shadows always ask, "What do you want?"

I believe it was Lorien who asked, "Where are you going? What do you live for?" which somehow combines both the above concepts.

I've always been a "who are you" person. I keep getting things I want, but if they don't properly skew with who I somehow believe I should be, they don't appeal so much to me somehow.

thoughts on Billy Mumy

I first saw a young Billy Mumy in an episode of The Twilight Zone" I think he was about 5 yrs old, talking to his long dead Grandma on his plastic toy telephone. I noticed that for such a little kid,his acting was excellent and right on cue.
next I watched him become a childhood space hero in Lost In Space..I wanted to BE Billy Mumy back then!
I have watched B-5 from its Priemier to its final closing episode and was so glad to see him again this time, cast in the role of Lennier where once again his performance was stellar as Dalen's personal assistant.
Bill Mumy is a talented actor, and one of a very FEW "Child Actors" that escaped the drinking, drugs, and addiction problems that took down other child actors. Bill went on to marry one woman, and raise their kids, along the way he developed his music abilities, and wrote some interesting music and performed in his band.
Anyone else have any input on this talented actor?
The only thing I didnt like was how B-5 ended his role

Don't know how many of you get over to the Galactic Gateway, jmsnews, recarts and other B5 forums ... but a link was posted there for a video tribute to Andreas. It is quite touching and uses some of the most poigniant moments from the show to display the raw power and intensity fo Andreas' acting abilities. There was alss one done for Richard Biggs when he passed away. I thought i would share this in case some of you hadn't gotten over to those forums and would be interested in seeing it.
JMS' words on G'Kar

Just over a year ago, Andreas Katsulas -- who loved smoking with a
passion that cannot be described -- was diagnosed with lung cancer,
which by then had already spread to other areas. He quit smoking at
once and went on a healthy diet and vitamin program, but there was
little hope of a good resolution even though the new regimen was very
good for him. When we spoke about it, he laughed, and said, "Now that
I'm dying I've never felt better!"

His spirits were always up and positive, putting everyone at ease about
his condition, because...well, that's the kind of person he was.

A couple of months ago, he and his wife convened a dinner with me,
Doug, and Peter Jurasik, which was filled with laughter and stories and
good food. He wanted to know all the stories we never told him
because, as he said, "Who am I going to tell?" So we did. Because we
knew we were saying goodbye, and there would not be a second chance.

Last night, in the company of his wife and family, Andreas closed his
eyes and went away.

He lived an amazing life...full of travel and wonder and good
work...was part of the world renowned Peter Brook company...he saw the
planet, loved and was loved, ate at great restaurants, smoked too many
cigarettes...he lived a life some people would die for.

And, sadly, due to the last part of that equation...he did.

Memorial arrangements are still being worked out, but will doubtless be
private.

Andreas is gone...and G'Kar with him, because no one else can ever play
that role, or ever will.

I will miss him terribly.

Does anybody know what was inside the Apocalypse Box, that Gideon won in a poker game? The box talked, offered insights, and gave both warnings and advice. Whatever it was, it never came out of the box. The guy who lost it said that it lied sometimes, too.

Anyone know what it was?

My pet theory was that the box contained an unborn Vorlon, but I have no evidence.

Crusade: Revealing the Arc

From what I understand JMS already had the entire story arc planned for Crusade. Considering that Crusade is a lost cause (sorry for the unintentional pun), Has,can,or would, he revealed the story arc?

Origins of the Great Machine

You know, I've always wondered about this, and I don't think it's ever been brought up in any of the episodes/books, or discussed on a forum.

Who built the Great Machine? After all, we know it probably wasn't the Vorlon or the Shadows, or any of the other First Ones; with its ability to mutate time, though, it could have itself have been built in the future and moved back into the past.

It does seem to have a touch of Vorlon to it (isn't it made from technology humans aren't ready for yet), but I can't believe the Vorlon would have built it and left it alone.

Any theories?

Crusade Observations

Now that I've finally got the DVD collection for Crusade, I figure I might start a thread for little observations.

----------------------
Overall:

The Good: The Characters are the best I've seen, and the writing is pretty solid too. What I really like B5\Crusade the most is that it's universe is the more realistic and indepth. Gary Cole plays the perfect "AntiPicard". Frankly I could see the two crews fighting each over, one dedicated to principle, and the other deciding to do whatever it takes to do their job.

The Bad: The CGI. I agree with one TV critic who said that the CGI gave the who series a cheesy feel. While it can be a handy tool in bringing the writers imagination to reality, over reliance can make the production look like a bad cartoon.

In the episode "Now For a Word", how in the solar system could that Centauri battle ship miss that Narn heavy cruiser at POINT BLANK RANGE?! My guess is that maybe the Narns got a hold of some Minbari stealth technology and couldn't wait to try it out. Any other speculations?

We currently enjoying Season Four, me for the third time and my husband for the first.

When the spousal unit saw how Lorien saved Sheridan by "replenishing his life force" he said the series jumped the shark for him. He's still enjoying it, but was deeply irritated by what he termed "the introduction of too many fantasy elements." I can see his point.

I remember when I first saw the resurrection, I felt much the same way. Sure, they try to explain it away a little later, but it still felt wrong. Like they'd written themselves out of a corner by using a godlike being. I never did warm up to Lorien, though I continue to love the series.

Are there moments in the series that didn't ring true for anyone else?

Seeing as how the actor who played Dr. Stephen Franklin has died, do you think the character will be recast, or that the death will be written into future stories? I hope it's the latter. After all, in B5 Crusade they had him infected with some awful disease so that could be the thing the writers use to explain Franklin's absence in TMOS. Kind of sucks not to acknowledge the actor's death, know what I mean? Biggs deserves to have his character retired after his passing. I can see no one else playing the part.

Teleporation technology

With the exception of technomage "magic", there seems to be no teleporation in the Babylon 5 universe. This might be because JMS is under the impression that teleporation is impossible. But the truth is that teleporation is possible. A number of recent real life experiments have proven that ( http://pr.caltech.edu/media/Press_Releases/PR11935.html ). Of course these experiments have only dealt with elementary particles and such and therefore are many centuries away from being able to teleport something as massive as person (or even a germ for that matter). Nevertheless, as far as B5 is concered, super-advanced civizations like the Vorlon Empire and the Shadows of Z'ha'dum should, at least theorically, have teleportation. On the other hand maybe teleportation is too complicated to be of practical use even if it doesn't violate certain physical laws, so whatever.

Re-Creating Star Trek Enterprise

Since the Trek universe was brought up in another thread, I thought I'd throw out some ideas I would employ if I were in charge of Star Trek Enterprise:

1) Since time travel is a very prominent factor in the series' premise, I would use it to re-invent the entire series from the ground up; go back to the original series to get the lowdown on initial Federation/Star Fleet history, and then create something that is truer to the Trek universe continuity (something that is sorely lacking with the new series).

2) I would lower the tech aspect of the series, make it look much closer to the designs brought out for TOS. Really make the technology look 22nd Century instead of trying to pass off 24th Century looks as 22nd.

3) I would introduce some more characters that were first seen in TOS, such as the Tellarites, and giving a nod to Larry Niven and the animated Trek series I would introduce the Kzinti race in a whatever-happened-to story.

4) Going back to the first point, I would remake the Romulan story to the original, where the race was encountered in the late 21rst Century and the Treaty of 2105 was in place. Then I would dump the Romulan story altogether as I want to focus on the Kzinti.

5) Re-invent the Klingon story to its original form, then drop them in favor of the Kzinti. Basically they would fill in for the Klingon since in the Man/Kzin-animated Trek storyline they were among the first races with whom pre-Federation, pre-warp Earth was at war.

Basically, everything in regards to continuity would be restored. That would get the fans back and also give a nod to TOS and the Niven novels which would refresh the Trek universe.

Alternate B5 history

Babylon 5 alternate history, like all other alternate history, seems to offer LIMITLESS potential for new concepts and stories. Though I've thought about numerous alternate B5 scenarios, right now I'd like to focus in one: The Narn-Centuari War.

When Morden asks G'Kar the infamous question, "What do you want?", G'Kar's response is that he wants the Centauri Republic totally and utterly destoyed. At first Morden seems impressed with G'Kars answer(s). But when G'Kar expresses that he doesn't know what he wants after the Centuari have been destoyed, Morden seems to lose interest and later provides the Centauri Republic with secret military aid from the Shadows. Now if G'Kar had answered Morden's question "correctly" -- that is, if he had express a desire for the Narns to conquer other civilizations -- then it wouldv'e been the Narn Regime that got the secret military aid from the Shadows. And one possible outcome of this setup would be that the whole Narn-Centauri war situation would've been reversed. The bulk of the Centauri military fleet could've been wiped out by the Shadows, the Narns couldv'e invade Centauri Prime and Londo coulv'e been kicked off the Babylon 5 Advisory Council.

Yup! Alternate B5 history kicks ass! Can't wait to do more of it.

What if the Minbari Federation offered a REAL surrender to the Earth Alliance? If that were the case, here are some possible terms of surender:

1) The Minbari would be required to hand over the Grey Council and numerous Minbari military leaders to Earth for the purpose of being tried for war crimes.
2) The Minbari would be required to pay reparations to Earth.
3) The Minbari would be required to make territorial concessions to Earth.
4) The Minbari would be required to substantially reduce the size of their military force.

I know there likely would be certain practical problems regarding how to compell the Minbari to follow these terms of surrender. But you also have to remember that it's just a TV show, so whatever.

You can see what's currently available by looking on eBay for auctions by seller "babylon5auctions".

My favorite already is the Londo Mollari doll which cast him...in a bad light. I guess JMS is going to auction things off in batches.

As Per JMS on the new DVD. The Cure for the Plague would have been found midway in season 2. The real crux of the story would center around the following. ( I have read three of the 4 scripts that would have comrised the rest of season 1). Gideon would locate a ship similar to the one that destroyed the Cerebus.
It is a Shadow/Human Hybrid he would discover a vast conspiracy that a faction of Earthforce is using illegal Shadow Technology Gideon also learns that the Techno Mage powers are based on Shadow Tech casusing a rift with Galen. The season would end with Gideon being shot just as he was going to hold a conference and blow the lid of the conspiracy. As Per JMS. Gideon would then die and become merged with the Apocalypse Box for a while before he later returns. The Crew would go on to find a cure, then become renegades due to their continued persuit of the Shadow Tech Conspiracy. Durena would vanish for a couple of shows only to return with missing memories and a mysterious sword. The arch was also supposed to go on to have Durena gain some of Galens powers but in doing so, cause a major rift with Galen.

Thanks again TNT for blowing what would have been the best Sci Fi show in the last seven years.

When NASA was preparing for the Apollo Project, it took the astronauts to a Navajo reservation in Arizona for training.

One day, a Navajo elder and his son came across the space crew walking among the rocks. The elder, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question. His son translated for the NASA people:

"What are these guys in the big suits doing?"

One of the astronauts said that they were practicing for a trip to the moon. When his son relayed this comment, the Navajo elder got all excited and asked if it would be possible to give to the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity when he saw one, a NASA official accompanying the astronauts said, "Why certainly!" and told an underling to get a tape recorder.

The Navajo elder's comments into the microphone were brief. The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father had said.

The son listened to the recording and laughed, uproariously. But, he refused to translate. So, the NASA people took the tape to a nearby Navajo village and played it for other members of the tribe. They, too, laughed, long and loudly, but also refused to translate the elder's message to the moon.

Finally, an official government translator was summoned. After he finally stopped laughing, the translator relayed the message:

"Watch out for these guys. They have come to steal your land."

When B5 Geeks Get Married

I just had to share this with some folks who will understand. My husband and I included the following reading in our (fairly traditional) wedding ceremony. I'm sure you all will recognize it. None of our friends or family correctly identified its source, although some guessed that it came from the Bible, the Koran, Rumi, or some unidentified philosopher or theologian.

What is truth? And what is God?

If I take a lamp and shine it toward a wall, a bright spot will appear on the wall. The lamp is our search for truth, for understanding. Too often, we assume that the light on the wall is God. But the light is not the goal of the search. It is the result of the search. The more intense the search, the brighter the light on the wall. The brighter the light on the wall, the greater the sense of revelation upon seeing it.

Similarly, someone who does not search, who does not bring a lantern with him...sees nothing. What we perceive as God is the byproduct of our search for God. It may simply be an appreciation of the light, pure and unblemished, not understanding that it comes from us. Sometimes we stand in front of the light and assume that we are the center of the universe. God looks astonishingly like we do. Or we turn to look at our shadow and assume that all is darkness. If we allow ourselves to get in the way, we defeat the purpose, which is to use the light of our search to illuminate the wall in all its beauty...and all its flaws...and in so doing better understand the world around us.

I was recently befriended by Warren, who told me a bit about Babylon 5, and I was disappointed to find it was no longer on TV. Just curious to know what you other afficionados' takes are on its description. I've been haunting eBay for a good deal on the first season, but I don't wanna get stuck with bootleg junk. I was serious about one seller's package, but I got beat out in the last few seconds. I love science fiction, so would you say I would love the money spent on it, sight unseen?

Has anyone here ever read any books by Sharon Shinn? If so, are they comparable to a taste of Babylon 5 cuisine?

BABYLON 5 Movie Doesn't Get Out of Spacedock After All!!
I am – Hercules!!
“If they can do a Brady Bunch
movie, you can be sure that sooner
or later, somebody's going to do a B5 movie.”

-- “Babylon 5” creator J. Michael Straczynski.
He’s probably right. We’ll see if the 50-year-old Straczynski lives long enough to have anything to do with that "Babylon 5" movie.
It seems like ever since rumors started flying about Joss Whedon bringing “Firefly” to the big screen, Straczynski has been dropping his own coy hints about a “Babylon 5” movie right over the horizon.
Well, now it looks certain that “Serenity” will fly alone, at least in the foreseeable future.
Trouble is, Warner Bros. couldn’t be bothered to put up the financing. And, apparently, neither could any other studio.
Here’s what Straczynski posted to his Web site http://www.jmsnews.com/msg.aspx?id=1-17289 Friday night:

----------
The rule of thumb in Hollywood is that for every thousand scripts that get written, only a few dozen get into development, and out of those, only one will ever get made...if that.

A little over a year ago, I was approached by a company that wanted to make a Babylon 5 movie. They optioned the rights, and commissioned a script. (It's worth mentioning that I, not WB, own the rights to a B5 movie. When we were negotiating the original B5 deal -- by whose terms I will never see a dime in profit -- the one thing they did let me have were the movie rights, figuring they'd never be worth anything in the long run.)

Anyway...on December 27th of 2003, the script for "The Memory of Shadows" was turned in, and the process began of trying to make the deal work with all the various forces involved. It is, to say the least, a very difficult process on any movie where the studio does not directly take the financial reins. In terms of B5, Warner's position was esssentially, "We only do big-budget movies with big names, so you're on your own." If there were big-name movie actors in the film, they'd get behind it; without that, things become very problematic, especially as far as the financing was concerned. You much have to put together a consortium of international interests and business plans rivaled in complexity only by the Allied invasion of Normandy Beach.

Nonetheless, every attempt was made by the people involved to get this deal in place. This was not being done by Doug or myself, but rather by the company/individuals who approached us and optioned the rights. At times, it seemed we were inches away from a deal...stages were reserved at Elstree, actors were contacted, a director was in place, the script went through many revisions, a few key staff were hired, again not by me...it was really a year-long roller coaster ride. During that time, the people involved, with every good intention, tried very hard to pull the necessary pieces together on the deal. The option expired in late December 2004, but I renewed it without cost, to give those involved more time to try and make things work.

In the end, however, the deal could be put together, and it did not look as if that was going to change at any point in the foreseeable future. So the option has reverted, and to all intents and purposes, the project has dead ended. Nor do I think this particular incarnation will arise again at any point in the future, though prognostication has always been a tricky art, especially if you have to do it without the benefit of hindsight.

This was not the first time someone's taken a run at a B5 feature film, and it will not be the last. Eventually it will happen, because such things are simply inevitable. If they can do a Brady Bunch movie, you can be sure that sooner or later, somebody's going to do a B5 movie. The only thing I can say without equivocation is that when that day comes, as the rights-holder, I will make darned sure that it's done right, because I'd rather have no B5 movie than one that doesn't live up to what fans and I myself would want to see.

To that end...I can wait.

Anyway, just thought you should know the story.

jms
----------
Straczynski, who has bitched and moaned for over a decade now that “Deep Space Nine” stole his “Babylon 5” idea, says he also wants a shot at creating the next “Star Trek” series. Dare we hope it’s as good as “Crusade” and “Jeremiah”?

A Message from JMS

I'm trying this via google to see if I can access the groups, since
I've been offline since AOL stopped carrying newsgroups.

I don't normally do this...in fact, I don't think I've ever done this
in any group before, because I've always kind of waited to make sure it
was worth doing, and that it would make a difference.

I'm sending this to both the B5 folks reading this and any Trek fans
looking on.

Bryce Zabel (recently the head of the Television Academy and
creator/executive producer of Dark Skies) and I share one thing in
common. We are both long-time Trek fans, from the earliest days, who
felt that the later iterations were not up to the standards set by the
original series. (I'm exempting TNG because that one worked nicely,
and was in many ways the truest to the original series because Gene was
still around to shepherd its creation and execution.)

Over time, Trek was treated like a porsche that's kept in the garage
all the time, for fear of scratching the finish. The stories were, for
the most part, safe, more about technology than what William Faulkner
described as "the human heart in conflict with itself." Yes, there
were always exceptions, but in general that trend became more and more
apparent with the passage of years. Which was why so often I came down
on the later stories, which I did openly, because I didn't feel they
lined up with what Trek was created to be. I don't apologize for it,
because that was what I felt as a fan of Trek. That's why I had Majel
appear on B5, to send a message: that I believe in what Gene created.

Because left to its own devices, allowed to go as far as it could,
telling the same kind of challenging stories Trek was always known for,
it could blow the doors off science fiction television. Think of it
for a moment, a series with a forty year solid name, guaranteed
markets...can you think of a better time when you take chances and can
tell daring, imaginative, challenging stories? Why play it safe?

When Enterprise went down, those involved shrugged and wrote it off to
"franchise fatigue," their phrase, not mine.

I don't believe that for a second. Neither does Bryce. There's a
tremendous hunger for Trek out there. It just has to be Trek done
*right*.

Last year, Bryce and I sat down and, on our own, out of a sheer love of
Trek as it was and should be, wrote a series bible/treatment for a
return to the roots of Trek. To re-boot the Trek universe.
Understand: writer/producers in TV just don't do that sort of thing on
their own, everybody always insists on doing it for vast sums of money.
We did it entirely on our own, setting aside other, paying deadlines
out of our passion for the series. We set out a full five-year arc.

But when it came time to bring it to Paramount, despite my track record
and Bryce's enormous and skillful record as a writer/producer, the
effort stalled out because of "political considerations," which was
explained to us as not wishing to offend the powers that be.

So on behalf of myself and Bryce, I'm taking the unusual step of going
right to the source...right to you guys, fueled in part by a number of
recent articles and polls, including one at www.scifi.com/scifiwire in
which nearly 18,000 fans voted their preference for a new Trek series,
and 48% of that figure called for a jms take on Trek. (The other
choices polled at about 18% or thereabouts.)

See, if somebody doesn't like a story, doesn't want to buy it, that's
all well and good, that's terrific, that's the way it's supposed to be.
But when "political considerations" are the basis...that just doesn't
parse.

So here's the deal, folks. If you want to see a new Trek series that's
true to Gene's original creation, helmed by myself and Bryce, with
challenging stories, contemporary themes, solid extrapolation, and the
infusion of some of our best and brightest SF prose writers, then you
need to let the folks at Paramount know that. If the 48% of the 18,000
folks who voted at scifi.com sent those sentiments to
Paramount...there'd be a new series in the works tomorrow.

I don't need the work, I have plenty of stuff on my plate through 2007
in TV, film and comics, so that's not an issue. But I'd set it all
aside for one shot at doing Trek right, and I know Bryce feels the
same.

If you want this to happen...it's up to the Trek and B5 fans to make it
so.

The rest I leave to the quiet turning of your considered conscience.

J. Michael Straczynski

Hello,

Two new things this morning. Offers and some finalizations are being put into effect over the next two weeks for babylon 5 TMOS (The Memory of Shadows) according to series creator JMS. The next couple of weeks will be big in determining the face of the show.

Also, in a very rare promotional appearance locally, Evolutionary Biologist Dr. Jack Horner confirmed that he has begun work on Jurassic Park 4. Dr. Horner is a well-respected archeologist who has discovered more new species than others in his field. He has been used as an advisor on several Discovery Channel specials as well as all 3 Jurassic Park films. Dr. Horner is credited with the change in the T-Rex in Jurassic Park 3 that showed the creature to be more of a scavenger than a hunter based upon the latest findings.

Although he did not have details of Jurassic Park 4, Dr. Horner did confirm that he is involved and has been working on it.

The Memory of Shadows is the title for the first Babylon 5 movie intended for theatrical release, in contrast to the six previous made-for-TV movies. Steven Michael Straczynski, beginning this April in the Untied Kingdom. The technology of the ancient and extinct Shadow race is being unleashed upon the galaxy by an unknown force, and Earthforce intelligence officer Diane Baker, whose brother was recently killed in a mysterious explosion, is out to find out who is behind the intergalatic conspiracy. Joining her in her investigation is Galen, a techno-mage who has been charged with keeping the technology out of the hands of those who would abuse it.

Hello,

Most of you know me as the movie guy.
From time to time, you have seen various contests promoting one of my two books. I have decided recently to work with a charity known as Childs Play. This charity works with Childrens Hospitals to provide gifts for children who are in hospitals, especially over the holidays. Since Xmas 04 has passed, I wanted to get a jump on my 2005 plans and I am looking for people who want to help out. I am planning on doing a donation drive and giving a % of funds raised from my books, I may even do full % until then. Anyway, I wanted to get your ideas, and see if you would like to help out.

Thank you,

Gareth

Production Starst in March

A bright and attractive woman in her late 20s or early 30s, she's an Earthforce Intelligence Officer in civilian clothes who is reputed to be one of the best agents in the service. When her beloved brother is killed in a mysterious explosion on his spacecraft, Diane sets out to learn what caused the tragedy. She suspects a top-level cover-up -- but before she can get to the root of the problem, she is herself accused of conspiracy and murder. Despite the efforts of her friend, Elizabeth Lochley, to shield her, Diane finds herself behind bars, prey to a corrupt official who will stop at nothing to protect his greedy self-interest. But to Diane's amazement, the remarkable Galen, a techno-mage of near-supernatural skill and daring, enlists her help in unraveling the real mystery behind the recent deaths. Their investigation reveals that an ancient technology perfected by the mystic extinct Shadow race is being unleashed upon mankind by some as yet unknown conspirator. Once unleashed, the huge and all powerful shadow vessels could enslave the entire galaxy -- unless quick steps are taken to avert calamity...
Galen - Unknown
A cloaked, mysterious figure, 30-45, he appears to be human -- but there's an intensity about him that bespeaks something supernaturally powerful and enigmatic. Yet there's also something wry and urbane about Galen, a suggestion that he has humor and wicked wit lurking under his inscrutable exterior. A techno-mage -- one of an ancient sect that used science to perform apparently miraculous feats -- Galen is the guardian left behind by his kind to ensure that the ancient Shadow technology did not fall into the wrong hands. Aghast when he realizes that his long vigilance has been violated, Galen sets out to learn who is behind the Shadow technology that now threatens the galaxy. He teams with the feisty Diane in his investigation -- and he comes to feel real tenderness for his human ally. A hero and a deeply moral force, Galen stands strong against the forces of corruption that have been unleashed by his own people...
Colonel Joss Morgan - Unknown
A dashing and handsome officer in his late 20s or early 30s with the Earthforce Marines, he is the head of a security detachment sent to Babylon 5 to protect a contingent of inter-galactic diplomats who are meeting there. Humorous and daring, Morgan tries to befriend Elizabeth Lochley, the current commander of Babylon 5, but she's a bit prickly about having her jurisdiction violated by his forces. Later, Morgan and his forces prepare to battle the Hunter Killers unleashed by the evil Tyrell -- a virtual suicide mission that they face with gallantry, bravery and resolve...
Tyrell - Unknown
35-45, dark, enigmatic, striking and chilling, he is another techno-mage, Galen's old childhood rival, who supposedly departed for a distant sector of the galaxy years ago. Yet Tyrell has been secretly infiltrating the area, developing the ancient shadow technology and putting it on sale to the highest bidder. A deadly adversary of supernatural skill and power, he is not a rogue, as initially suspected. In fact, he is actually carrying out a mandate of his own kind. When Galen resists the corruption and madness, Tyrell prepares to battle him to the death...

I fully intend to own all the seasons on DVD, but till then, can someone help me with where to start with all those books? Very daunting indeed when you stand in front of them at the book store!

I'd like to start at the begining, as I am often prone to do...

... but, what can we do to get JMS to write a couple of episodes of "Monk"? He use to write for "Murder She Wrote", I'm sure he could recycle a couple of plots... with the needed oddities and comedy included...

...at the very least, he could write an ep about a murder at a Bab5 convention... that could be fun for both Joe and all of us. A chance to poke fun at B5, fandom, geeks in general, and perhaps even sci-fi writing...

...just an idea...

... why do I see a website and a letter writing campaign in my future?

The Shadows are telepathic

I might be wrong about this, but I think the Shadows are telepathic. "But if the Shadows are telepathic, then why do telepathic waves jam their systems?" Because the Shadow's have a different form of telepathy than most other species. And this is mainly because the telepathic members of most other species have been genetically modified by the Vorlons. Since the Shadows and the Vorlons have been archenemies for millions of years, the Vorlons, therefore, deliberately created telepaths whose telepathic frequencies can jam Shadow systems. Shadow telepathy explains why people hear that Shadow "screem" in their minds when a Shadow ship flies by. And even though there are telepaths among the Centauri population, the Shadows were able to establish a base on Centuari Prime because Centauri telepaths develped without Vorlon genetic manipulation. (The Centauri are probably among the few races that haven't been genetically manipulated by the Vorlons. That explains why Londo said he saw nothing when Kosh left his encounter suit.)

My assertions here on Shadow telepathic abilities may not be entirely persuasive. But until I can be convinced otherwise, I'm sticking with this view.

Personally I think that there was a Vorlon Fleet waiting to pounce on the Mimbari , in case they didn't withdrawl from Earth. They knew the importance of the humans thanks to Valen\Sinclair and destroying us would upset the timeline.

Second I wonder if anyone knows how many big an Earth or any other races fleet is and how many fleets?

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the Babylon 5 family
has suffered another loss - Tim Choate (Zathras) was killed in a
motorcycle
accident on his way to a play rehearsal Friday night...
Unfortunately, I don't know much more than that right now, but I'll
post more as soon as I hear it...

Having been a fan for about a decade a few things still puzzle me.
1- Why didn't the Centari Empire just take over Earth especially since they believed it to be a former colony? The Centari are/were an imperialist power bent on conquest and weren't exactly driven by peace and understanding. By giving Earth interstellar travel they only thing they did was to create a rival power.

2- If the Mimbari are so powerful that Sheridan was the only captain to defeat a Mimbari ship then why did it take them 2 years to almost defeat us?

Narn's red giant sun

As we all know, the homeworld of the Narn Regime orbits a red giant star. But somehow, I kind of have a problem with that. As I understand it, red giant stars are usually stars that have expanded something like 100 times their previous size as they reach the end of their lifespans. If that's the case for Narn, then Narn must have been a frozen wasteland before its sun expanded. But if that's the case, how could life on Narn as we know it evolve? If Narn is like Earth, it should take some 3 to 4 billion years for life on Narn to reach its current state. But an expanding sun only takes a few million years to reach its maximum size. Can any astronomer-types explain away this seemingly scientifically inaccurate setup? Until I get answers to that question, here are some possibilties that I (and certain other people) considered:

1) Narn's sun is a fluke. Perhaps under very rare circumstances, a red giant star can last for billions of years.
2) The Narn people originated in some other solar system and were transfered to their current homeworld by some highly advance alien civilization (most likely the Vorlon Empire).
3) Narn's sun was artificially created by some highly advance alien race (Lorien's people?) with the capacity to last the four-billion-or-so years needed for life on Narn to evolve

Crusade Widescreen Petition

Hello,

I am starting a Petition for Crusade to be released on Widescreen format on DVD. I will have the form on my page soon but for now, go to www.sknr.net and send me an e-mail and I can use that as a signature. The series on DVD according to JMS has raised almost 1/2 BIllion in Sales so I think 200,000 for Widescreen format is not alot to ask for. This is a great show that was axed before it had a chance, and despite all the meddling it still came out very well.

No Widescreen for Crusade

From JMS when asked about Crusade being in widescreen format when it arrives on Dec 7th.

Alas, no.

The reason that WB was able to release B5 wide is that TNT had paid to have
them re-telecine'd to that format. It would take about two hundred grand to go
through and do that with Crusade...and even though they've now grossed about
half a BILLION dollars on the B5 dvd's to date, they don't seem inclined to
want to spend that

"SHADOWS OF Z'HA'DUM"
(sung to the tune of Pat Benatar's "Shadows of the Night")

chorus
We're running with the Shadows of Z'ha'dum
A race that's brought the galaxy much gloom
When Sheridan's Whitestar flies through the dome
We'll get nuked in the end

The planet Z'ha'dum, the planet Z'ha'dum is where the Shadows can be found
And as it turns out, the planet Z'ha'dum is where Sheridan's wife hangs around
She invites him to come to Z'ha'dum to learn the truth about the Shadows

chorus

On Z'ha'dum Sheridan learns that the Shadows believe strength comes from war
They want the strong to live and the weak to die like in the Shadow wars before
Sheridan rejects the Shadows' view
He proceeds to launch an attack on them, it's all true

chorus

Before the Whitestar crashed through the big dome
Sheridan jumped into a bottomless pit

chorus

News on New show from JMS

Y'know, if there's anything more annoying than having to sit on good news, I
can't think of what it might be. (Well, okay, being staked to an ant hill at
high noon is a pretty obvious one, but you get the idea.)

The only things I can say right now about B5:TMoS is that now that all the
correct agreements have been signed, sealed and delivered, the draft has gone
in, met with great enthusiasm all around, notes have been received, and the
next draft is in process and has to be delievered within two weeks so that
certain other steps can be set into motion.

I still can't tell you what it *is* because that has to come from the proper
people through the proper channels at the proper time...but I can tell you a
few cases of what it *isn't*...it isn't a novel, or a short story, a comic, an
animated series, a radio drama or a stage play. Beyond that, deponent sayeth
not.

Except to say that it's pretty cool.
