I may be wrong, but I always got the impression that Sinclair was originally meant to be the Commander through all five seasons, but something happened and they had to replace him. Does anyone know why Bruce Boxleiter (I spelled that wrong)/Sheridan was brought in? Or am I completely wrong and Sinclair was only meant for a single season?

Re: What's the story with Sinclair and Sheridan?
Thu, March 23, 2006 - 4:15 PMMy understanding is that they determined that Sinclair wasn't telegenic enough. Anyone with differing info?
Personally, I was glad for the replacement. His acting was *terrible* cheezy. -

Re: What's the story with Sinclair and Sheridan?
Thu, March 23, 2006 - 7:03 PMWasn't that all. Sinclaire wanted to something else. Broadway for example. Being that JMS already wrote Sinclaire into the earth mimbari war, he thought that throwing him into the shadow war was too much. So he wrote him out and came back to in time.

Re: What's the story with Sinclair and Sheridan?
Fri, March 24, 2006 - 10:44 AMYeah, originally it was going to be Sinclair throughout the 5 year arc. As passionate as the actor was about the roll, his acting just wasn't up to snuff. Luckally, JMS had planned 'trapdoors" for all of the characters in the event they had to let an actor go, an actor left or an actor died. JMS mentioned somewhere that there already was a plan in place for a military style character to be introduced durring the Shadow War, so he just folded it together into Sinclair's remaining story arc and Sheridan was born. Did you notice that Jeffry Sinclair and John Sheridan share the same initials as Joe Straczynski? (which is why there is a "J.S." on the teddy bear. That was an actual gift to Joe from a collegue).
A similar thing happened with Talia's character (the blond telepath). She was also supposed to have a 5 year arc. When she was let go, her story arc was shuffled over to Lyta's character.

Re: What's the story with Sinclair and Sheridan?
Thu, June 15, 2006 - 8:39 PMAs far as Talia and Lyta were concerned JMS mentioned that he had Pat Tallman in mind when he originally created the telepath character because he thought she had telepath eyes. The only reason that Talia came into the picture was because JMS was not able to cast Pat in the first season do to a fallout in contract negotiations.

Re: What's the story with Sinclair and Sheridan?
Sun, June 18, 2006 - 6:47 PMAnd evidently there was some friction between the actor as one of the other cast members. (Someone he had no scenes with in War Without End...)
Seems like there was a thread about the Gret Teddy Bear Fued somewhere in this tribe. (JMS vs Peter David)

Re: What's the story with Sinclair and Sheridan?
Fri, September 1, 2006 - 11:01 PMEveryone else has explained away the off-stage stuff with Michael O'Hare, so let me add a bit of trivia about Sinclair and Sheridan.
In the book, "To Dream in the City of Sorrows", by Katherine Drennan (JMS' wife) it is explained that before entering Earth Force Academy, Sinclair spent some time bumming around doing odd jobs and basically drifting. So, when he entered Earth Force Academy, Sheridan was already an upperclassman, while Sinclair was a pleb (it's never said outright, but you get the feeling that Sinclair is actually older than Sheridan).
While a freshman, Sinclair accidentally knocked a tray of food on Sheridan, who then made it a personal vendetta of his to give Sinclair hell. When Sheridan graduated, Sinclair actually celebrated! Although they met each other over the ensuing years, they were always very formal to each other. Later, during the food riots on Mars, they made up a bit. During the war, Sinclair was actually a shuttle pilot for Sheridan on the way to his new ship.
When Babylon 5 actually went online ("The Gathering") Sheridan and the Agamemnon were there to escort the President at the dedication ceremony.
Given their different personalities and different command styles, I've always felt there is a bit of friendly rivalry between the two men. Sheridan is much more personable, while Sinclair (coming from a long line of military leaders) has a more commanding presence. Neither one could serve under the other, I think, but in a firefight they would be good allies to have.
Personally, I've always preferred Sinclair.
